Part of the planning stage was to read through as many books as possible and to purchase reference books that we could take along.

We have also read a number of books related to Africa which we did not bring on the trip and I will compile a list and post it at a later date.

As an alternative to the Lonely Planet travel guides, I have found the Bradt travel guides to be excellent; sometimes even giving more background information and more detailed maps.
