For a total of 528,958 learners (50.8% females) in Namibia there are 1,545 schools, 18,117 teachers (60.9% females) and 3,524 support staff 966.9% females) (one school for 342 students & 29 students per teacher).
1,010 of the total 1,545 schools are primary schools of which 951 are state schools and 59 are private. 388 are combined schools of which 370 are state schools and 18 are private.
139 are secondary schools of which 124 are state schools and 15 are private. This implies that high schools are only 9% of the total number of schools in the country. (What use is education if you have completed only the primary level?)
and a further 8 other schools including special schools, 13th grade and the like.
The numbers of schools offering each grade drops considerably from grade 1 (1,342) to grade 12 (106).
Over a period of six years (1995-2001) the number of schools in Namibia had an average growth rate of only 1.9%
Teacher qualifications in many areas leave much to be desired.
When looking at the enrolments in different schools phases (grades/standards) per region, it becomes obvious how the numbers drop dramatically the higher the grade/phase.
