Once the vehicle has been prepared, regular preventative maintenance is important to ensure smooth operation of the vehicle. I have compiled a list of maintenance items that should be performed throughout the trip at various intervals. I have indicated in the lists below as to which time intervals I am performing these various checks. Of course, some items may need to be checked as part of trouble shooting a specific problem.
These checks really depend on the kind of driving that is being done, but checking tire pressure, oil level and coolant level on a daily basis should be a minimum regardless of driving conditions. Dusty conditions warrant checking and cleaning or replacing the air filter, bad fuel or running out of fuel and sucking up the rust deposits from the bottom of the tank may require a change in fuel filter and quickly checking the brake and clutch fluid levels only takes a few seconds.
