Metric to Imperial Tool Conversion

The Land Rover uses both metric and imperial nuts and bolts so knowledge of both metric and imperial tool sizes and how they relate comes in handy. You may often want to substitute a metric spanner or socket for an imperial one or vice versa. Most commonly you will have an imperial set of tools available that has a granularity of 1/32 of an inch (or maybe even as low as 1/16 of an inch).

The following table is a comparison of metric to imperial tool sizes when you have the availablilty of imperial tools with a granularity of 1/32 of an inch.

metric (mm) imperial (1/32)
-
-
1/8
5/32
3/16
1/4
9/32
5/16
11/32
13/32
7/16
15/32
1/2
9/16
19/32
5/8
21/32(11/16)
23/32
3/4
25/32
27/32(13/16)
7/8
29/32
15/16
1

Of course if you have an imperial set of tools available that has a granularity of 1/64 of an inch you will get much closer to the metric on a number of sizes.
