General advise - bring very few clothes! You can purchase just about anything in India at a fraction of the cost back home. Of course there are a few things that you will want to bring, especially if you are planning on trekking or undertaking more specialized travel. Another major factor is the time of year and where you will be traveling. The Northern tourist circuit of Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan can get quite cold during winter. Higher elevations in the south can also get chilly during the winter nights.

Some things to consider:

• Good walking shoes
• Hiking boots (for trekking)
• Cargo pants with zippers
• Long sleeve shirt (against sun and bugs)
• Warm hat (for the cold nights and train rides)
• Sarong (many uses)
• Wool or fleece sweater/jacket
• Gortex shell jacket
