Health

A very important aspect to enjoyable and safe travel is maintaining your health. A number of steps can be taken to significantly increase your chances of remaining healthy.

However, should something significantly go wrong, it is essential that you have taken out a good medical policy. The circumstances for each individual are different, so one company might not be the best choice for everyone. Regardless of choice, always remember to read the fine print!

Vaccinations are important and sometimes even required to enter certain countries. Plan your vaccinations several months before departure as some of them have to be given over the course of several weeks.

Malaria is a concern in many parts of the world. There is no vaccination for malaria but there are a variety of anti-malarial drugs available. For travellers remaining in a malaria area for extended periods of time, taking anti-malarial drugs may not be the best choice.

A well stocked medical kit including everything from over the counter drugs, prescription drugs, assortment of bandages and gauzes, a sterile kit, and definitely a reference book such as the Lonely Planet Healthy Travel in Africa is well advised. It is also a good idea is to take at least some basic first aid training before you depart on your trip.

We have covered the above mentioned topics in separate sections but for more information we suggest you consult your local travel health clinic or visit IAMAT (International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers).
